10 Design Mistakes Costing You Customers (And How to Fix Them)

Running a small business? You’re likely wearing all the hats, which means design details can sometimes fall through the cracks. But here’s the thing: a few simple design missteps could be quietly turning customers away. The good news? Better branding is achievable with some simple fixes.

I’ve rounded up 10 of the most common visual branding and website design slip-ups I see (and trust me, you’re not alone). Plus, I’m sharing practical tweaks to help you create a brand that looks polished and cohesive while working hard behind the scenes to boost conversions and elevate the user experience.

Let’s dive in!

1. Your branding is sending mixed signals

What it looks like: One logo on your site, another on social, and totally different colours in your email marketing. It’s confusing for your audience and dilutes trust.

Fix it: Create a simple brand style guide. Choose 2–4 brand colours, 1–2 fonts, and stick to the same logo across everything. Better branding creates consistency and trust, two essentials for building a memorable brand.

2. Is your homepage doing too much?

What it looks like: A homepage jam-packed with info, buttons galore, and every colour under the sun. Overwhelming, right?

Fix it: Using a website project planner can make the process simple. Embrace white space. Keep content clear and to the point. Use a simple, clean layout with no more than 5–6 main menu options. Less clutter = better site optimisation and a smoother user experience.

3. Generic stock photos are killing the brand vibe

What it looks like: Blurry pics or cheesy stock photos that don’t really match your brand vibe.

Fix it: Opt for high-quality, authentic images. Custom photography is amazing if it’s in your budget, but even quality stock photos (that actually look human!) can make a big difference in website credibility and conversion.

4. Looks great on desktop… but mobile’s another story

What it looks like: A gorgeous website on desktop that’s a hot mess on mobile. Buttons too small, text hard to read. You get the picture.

Fix it: Test your site on phones and tablets. Make sure it’s easy to navigate, read and click around. Mobile responsiveness is a must for better SEO and user experience.

5. Are your Calls-to-Action (CTAs) MIA?

Wondering what is a call to action? It’s simply a prompt that guides users towards your goal, and every scroll should lead to one.

What it looks like: Visitors land on your site but don’t know what to do next. No buttons, no prompts, no direction.

Fix it: Add clear action-based CTAs like “Book a Free Call,” “Shop Now,” or “Download Your Freebie.”

6. Font overload is disrupting the flow

What it looks like: A mix of fonts for every heading, paragraph and button. It’s visually messy, hard to read and makes your brand hard to recognise.

Fix it:  Stick to 2–3 fonts max: one for headings, one for body text, and maybe a special accent font if needed. Consistent fonts make your brand feel calm, cohesive and recognisable.

7. Your website feels like a scavenger hunt

What it looks like: Menu items all over the place, or important pages buried where no one can find them.

Fix it: Simplify your navigation. Use clear labels and group similar items under dropdowns. Smart structure supports both site optimisation and user experience.

8. SEO got left behind in the design

What it looks like: No alt text on images, headings out of order, slow load times. All of these hurt your search engine ranking.

Fix it: Use proper heading structure (H1, H2, H3), describe your images clearly, and compress them for faster loading. Good design and strong SEO go hand in hand. Don’t forget keyword-rich meta descriptions and mobile responsiveness. Feeling stuck? This SEO cheat sheet will be your best friend!

9. Your logo forgot what it’s supposed to say

What it looks like: Super detailed logos that look great blown up… but become a blur when shrunk down.

Fix it: Simplify! Your logo should look fab and be legible whether it’s on a billboard or your Insta profile. A clean, scalable logo is key to better branding and recognition.

10. Your socials missed your brand’s memo

What it looks like: Every post has different colours, fonts and styles. Nothing looks like it’s from the same brand.

Fix it: Create reusable templates in Canva (or your fave design tool) that use your brand colours, fonts and logo. On-brand social media graphics boost visibility and recognition across platforms.
